Just found this great article on wireless security that you must read. It's reprinted below for you.

-----------------------

I have written several different articles about securing your wireless connections. Having an insecure wireless network is like getting a megaphone and announcing your social security number to your whole neighborhood.

When your wireless network is not encrypted, anyone within range can gain access to your data fairly easily.A few days ago, some bad news came through the line. It seems like one method of wireless encryption has been broken.

A hacker has been able to break the encryption and gain access to data, even when the security is turned on. The encryption type that has been broken is called WPA-TKIP. It's one of the most common types of wireless network encryption, which means many wireless networks could be at risk.Luckily, I'm sharing this information with you well before anyone can get to your data.

It seems as if the hacker who has broken the wireless security is the only one so far. In a week or so, he will tell the rest of the world how he did it. After that, others will be able to use his technique and hack wireless connections around the world. So, how can you protect yourself?

Allow me to explain! Many wireless routers come with different types of security. The three main types are called WEP, WPA and WPA2. WEP and WPA are now vulnerable to attack. WEP has been known as a weak system for some time and WPA was just hacked a few days ago. On the other hand, WPA2 has not been affected.

That means if you change your wireless security to WPA2, you'll be safe.If you want to check and see what security you have on your wireless connection, you'll need the manual for your wireless router. Look in the manual for directions on how to set up the wireless security. Once you find that information, look to see which method you're currently using.

If you're using WEP or WPA, you should change to WPA2. If you're not using any at all, please activate WPA2!While most routers support WPA2, some do not. If your router doesn't support WPA2, you should continue to use WPA. Yes, it has been hacked, but it's far better than using nothing at all. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!
~ Gary

-------------------

Thanks to Gary at Worldstart for that article. No it's not the war on drugs, the war on crime, the war on terror or the usual war on everything. It's been a behind the scenes attack on gaining control of the Internet... a war on free enterprise.

The Internet is the only source of freedom and entrepreneurship that is available to all, for little or no cost. The "Average Joe" can find information, get educated and even make money online, right from the comfort of home. It's amazing! In fact, Internet businesses may be one of the few business models that can survive or even expand in the current economic turmoil.

The State Of Kentucky in the USA is trying to force 141 Internet gaming sites, (none of them based Kentucky, not even in the United States!) to block access to Kentucky users, or... get this.... to relinquish control of their domain names to the Goverment.

OK, I'm not a fan of gaming sites or gambling in general. If you're a fool and like handing over your hard earned cash to individuals preying on your stupidity, then good luck to you. It's your decision. And there's my point.

This is not about gambling but control and censorship.

Fact is governments are broke and getting broker! Governments have no money other than the money they steal from you and I via taxes. They're afraid of competition and will do anything to maintain control of their business, ie; tax collecting. So much for the land of the free!

Check out the article in the Washington Post and the brief news video on YouTube below.

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=o8VPQxbD7Xk

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/08/AR2008100802870.html

The real question is...will this seizure of assets stop at gaming sites? What's to stop them from shutting down or seizing any other legitimate business that is in competition with the government? Are we talking about China, the old USSR.

No folks. This is happening in America, the land of the free, a country built on freedom and free enterprise but now with one of the world's biggest bureaucracy's, a large debt burden, and a sinking economy.

So, what does this mean for you? Is your business at risk?
What can you do? Well...

Register your domain name outside the US or any major country.

Have backup servers offshore.

Safeguard your intellectual property (IP)

Transfer the ownership of your IP to a suitable offshore structure

Tell your friends.

Contact your representatives and tell them your views.

All the best to you,
Joe Jutrisa

E-bay Security:

Hi folks!
Every now and again, I receive questions on security issues from my site:
http://www.internethelpsite.com/

Usually these relate to antivirus/security suite packages or ebay security. Since this is so common I've decided to replay a typical scenario regarding ebay security here, so that this important information is freely available.

--------------------------------------------------
Client:

Hi Joe,
I am absolutely confused at the moment. I may be having an identity problem with my ebay account. It is under investigation but the separate help company has recommended zone alarms security. I currently use norton 360 but was told it did not do all it should. I have looked at various reviews and have just got more confused. Can you help me?

My Reply:

Hi Charlie, thanks for your enquiry.

Sorry to hear about all that. I really do understand.

My wife had a similar problem with her ebay account. She had numerous fraudulent transactions using her account and were billed to her credit card. This happened not only once but twice! There were ebay, bank and police investigations, cards cancelled twice and lots of hassles. Luckily the bank covered it all. She's now reticent do use her new (3rd card!) on ebay.

The biggest challenge is finding the source of this rogue activity and I'll say its not easy! We still don't know.

Here we go...

It could be from a spoofed site. See following advice and articles.
It could be spyware, trojan, keylogger, or other malaware installed on your computer
It could be as old fashioned as a dishonest person in a store you've dealt with who is using your details.

The first 2 you can deal with but the last needs detective or police work. Its difficult to trace.
You need to do a thorough scan of your computer using your Norton 360. (On a side note, I don't recommend Norton products because they have had a lot of holes in them. I know they have improved but don't know by how much).

Zonealarm was one of the best firewall providers around and still is but now they've repackaged themselves as security suites and use a 3rd party for their antivirus, so as a package they may not be as good as other providers.

No antivirus package is 100% secure, sorry but true. In fact nothing 100% secure, you need to get educated and have safe usage practices as well. Get my book :)

You can download a copy here:

http://www.internetsecuritysecrets.com/

There's lots of info at the internet help site. Personally I use Trend Micro PC-Cillan top of the line security suites and I have used Panda in the past with great success. Also Kapersky seems to be good.

Use the free scanners here:
http://internethelpsite.com/tools.html

There are others....you can try Trend Micro, Kapersky, Sophos, and more. Use them all and see what you find.

Really, you need to make sure that your PC is clean first and foremost. If not someone's got access to all of your details.

If its clean then go to my site here:
http://internethelpsite.com/educationcentre.html
and scroll down to read all the articles on ebay and paypal.

Next download and install the ebay toolbar. The info is in the links.

Sorry but this is very difficult and drawn out and it wont be fun. If worst comes to worst and you've got an infected PC and can't clean it up, you'll have to reformat your hard drive. There's a step by step guide on how to do this on my home page.

http://www.internethelpsite.com/

I really do wish you well and thanks for your enquiry.

Regards,
Joe Jutrisa

------------------------------------------------------------------

That's it! Remember to go back to http://www.internethelpsite.com/

and download all the free info and go to the education centre. There's no easy way except to get educated and keep up with safe usage practices.

All the best,

Joe Jutrisa

Buying a new laptop or PC? Don't!
(Not without getting some advice from a friendly geek)

Chances are that you've seen heaps of great deals around for new computers (and especially laptops). Beware! What seems like a bargain may actually be virtually unuseable.

Some retailers are advertising the latest you-beaut packages for well under $1000. What's wrong with that? Nothing. But be careful and read the fine print. Almost certainly, they'll come with Vista and as I've said before, this is one hungry beast! You'll need a lot of horsepower to run it. You need a fast processor and LOTS of ram.

The old XP needed to have AT LEAST 512 Mb of ram to operate and Vista needs AT LEAST 1Gb of ram. If you see a laptop with 512Gb or ram....run! Even a "Gig" isn't enough for many applications.

Ram is cheap these days! I would recommend doubling the minimum requirement as a starting point, ie; 1Gb for XP and 2Gb for Vista. This is a good starting point. You may require more depending on what you use it for.

I recently upgraded the ram on my old laptop. It came out with 256Mb of ram (yeah it was slow!) and I installed 1Gb. WOW! I thought someone gave me a new PC! The transformation was amazing. Apart from going like a rocket, It even started up in about a quarter of the time. I was really amazed at the result. So, dont throw away your old laptop just yet.

How much does all this cost? About $120 plus installation if required. Sure beats buying a new computer! And its got the good old XP.

Back to the story...

Make sure that your retailer supplies all the software discs (especially the Windows CD!). If you don't have these, you'll be in deep water if something goes wrong.

Also...did you know that you can still get XP???!!!

You bet. You do have a choice, but you'll have to coerce the retailer. Obviously, everyone's flogging Vista, so you won't see it advertised. I have seen some suppliers giving you the option on Ebay, though and at a good price.

Remeber! Get the PC to suit your needs. Be realistic about what you'll use it for. If its for basic office and school use, the above description will do. If you're doing some serious graphics work, video editting, or gaming, you'll need a higher spec machine.

Don't skimp. If you choose something cheap and underpowered, you'll end up with a very pretty doorstop! Again, do your research.

Happy shopping!

To Vista or Not....that is the question.

Should you upgrade? Unless you have good reason, I'd ask...why?

Unfortunately Vista is a resource hog and requires a lot of horsepower to run. It's a bit like running a full time video game. If you want it to look pretty, there is a cost (to your wallet as well). If you're buying a new PC, make sure it's got enough processing power and ram to run effectively. Do your research!

There's a great article here on this topic:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?forumID=7&threadID=275745&messageID=2653766&tag=nl.e497#2653766

Strangely, Windows owners are in quite a predicament at the moment. Microsoft is giving you the option of two operating systems. In fact, I believe there's going to be a release of Service Pack 3 for XP soon.

Personally, I wont be upgrading till next century (or until everything dies). I've finally got all my computers running as they should...quickly and reliably and have even got antivirus that's not a resource hog (no it's not Norton!).

I'm very happy and intend to stay that way.

Trend Micro PC-cillan regains it's crown!

Congratulations to the guys at Trend Micro! After releasing a "new improved???" dismal, resource sucking "2007" security package (see earlier post), it's great to see that they've finally come to their senses and done the right thing.

If you've got the 2007 version of Internet security, you should have received an email by now about an upgrade. Simply follow the instructions and grab the new package. Yet again, it's got a new interface but more importantly, they seem to have removed the resource sucking bug.

I'm glad to say that my PC is up and running as is fast as it was before! Phew! Thanks guys. It's great to see an organisation that listens to its customers. And by the way, the upgrade is FREE to existing users.

Trend Micro is once again the best value security package on the market today!

Is the new 2007 Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security responsible for crashing your PC?

Recently, I upgraded to the latest version of PC-Cillan only to be confronted with a host of problems. It seems that a process called PcScnSrv.exe is responsible for most of my woes. This little sucker (and it really is!) is responsible for draining all of my PC's memory and creating havoc.

I really had to find out what was going on. After bringing up Task Manager, I discovered that it was using up to 130,000k of memory. Not only that, my CPU usage was continually running at 100%! After I disabled it, my PC went back to normal.

Now my desktop's not slow. It's got heaps of grunt but this thing's sucking all the life out of my normally quick and reliable computer. What gives guys?

Haven't seen any fixes from Trend. What's going on fellas? I hope this improves soon.

Previous verisions of PC-Cillan were excellent and I used to recommend them to computer users. In fact I even dumped Norton in favour of PC-Cillan because Norton was such a drain on system resources!

Who's kidding here. This current version is far worse than anything I've ever used...period! In fact my poor old laptop has been rendered vitually useless. It can barelly start up or even keep running with such a huge drain on power.

Trend Micro recommends removing Spybot which really annoyed me.They say that it creates a conflict with their antivirus. Now I know why. In fact I dont think it makes any difference. We know what the culprit is, here. So far, The only way around seems to be to disable this process every time your start up your PC.

Here's how:

Bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+del)

click on processes

Look for PcScnSrv.exe and disable it.

Windows will ask you if you really want to do this. Click yes.

That's it until these guys get their act together. Personally, I wont be recommending Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007 on my website http://www.internethelpsite.com/ or to any of my friends.

Sadly, based on my experience, what seems like a great product has become a liability.

More on the new Adobe Reader 8 problems...

Since I download and create a lot of PDFs, I've been trying to come to terms with this new, "improved" version. Check my earlier post, but I really think the big boys seem to get worse with some of their upgrades. What's wrong with a simple PDF reader that's easy to use, customise, and loads fast....all the thing that most of us need, but that Adobe Reader is not!

It takes forever to load a new document (It's not too bad on my desktop PC, but I'd hate to try it on an older or slower, computer)

It's difficult to customise or to work how to fix just about anything

bookmarks don't display, even though I tick the bookmatk box!

every time I click on a link, I get a stupid dialog box asking me if I want to give permission to connect to a website. Now I don't mind doing this once, but there's no option to allow you to disregard this feature every time, as with some other programs (the..."dont ask me again").

Anyway, to get this thing to work sensibly, you have to personalise it... but first you have to work out how to do it. Good luck! Here's a few tips I've worked out so far...

Go to file>preferences> theres a selection panel on the left. Choose on that allows web pages to display without permission.

Under tools>customise toolbars, click everything!

Under >view>navigation panel>bookmarks is ticked.Chances are it still wont work!

Go to>view>full screen> click on that revert arrow and somehow the bookmarks appear!
Like I said, goodluck.

If you can make any sense of Adobe reader let me know.

A great alternative is Foxit Reader. It's small, compact, easy to read and super fast. Personally, I use both because I find that links don't always work in Foxit. So, if I'm just reading a document, I use Foxit. If I'm going through an ebook with lots of links, I use Adobe.

Try both!

Are "Guru" marketers killing the goose?

Some time ago I posted a comment in reply to Henry Gold's topic on Why Marketers go Broke. It's really an expose on all those outrageous income statements and hype they come up with when soliciting offers to their list. It's worth a look. Go here...

http://www.thecopywritingsecret.com/blog/?p=335

Here's my post...

Right on Henry!
You’re one of my favourites and have been from way back. I like your “no BS” approach. I’m glad to see there are still a few of us out there (truth is that we’re probably in the majority but we don’t get the exposure).

Like everyone here, we’re all students of marketing. Consequently our tolerance level and saturation point for hype and bullshit is getting very low.

I’m on a lot of lists, and 95% of it is the same rehashed offers and rubbish from a handful of so called expert marketers. Try and contact these guys when you need help or support regarding their products. Good Luck!

Fact is I rarely read past the first line of their email. Delete. Delete. Delete! The same goes for all of their affiliates who send me more of the same. So that leaves 5% of the “non gurus” who actually get my attention. “Joe Public” may not be as dumb as these guys think!

Don’t know about you guys, but here’s my list of “had-its”.
Had it with…

-squeeze pages for everything

-one time offers

-countdowns

-daily price increases

-never ending prelaunches

-$50,000 worth of bonuses

-daily, time sensitive, emails

-webinars, phone in seminars and other pitch fests

-help desks

-lack of contactability

-lack of accountability

-hype and BS

-outrageous income statements

-cures and guaranteed fixes for everthing

-adsense sites

-content generating software

-100% affiliate commissions

-junk sites with no content

-google adwords

-ebay ads for just about every keyword

Phew! That was a mouthful! I know I do. Sometimes I like hearing from them and sometimes I don't. I guess it depends on the content or the offer. Anyway, if I no longer feel that I want to receive their newsletters, I simply click on that unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Easy.

Now for some obscure reason, some people don't do that. They hit the SPAM button. This sets in motion a full chain of events and hurts everyone. Firstly, let's clear up a few things.

What is SPAM? Spam is Unsolicited Bulk Email (UBE). I'm sure you know what it looks like....viagra, cialis, stock market, and sex related matter, are some of the common ones.

What is not Spam? Newsletters, ezines, requests for information and anything else that you receive as a result of your registering with your email address is obviously not spam, because you requested it!

What to do:

If you no longer want to hear from someone, the majority of reputable marketers will have an unsubscribe link at the bottom of their email. It's usually from a third party supplier such as Aweber, Getresponse, Email aces, etc. Be nice! Please click on that link and unsubscribe yourself.

Why?

It's courteous and considerate, and the appropriate course of action in this instance. Remember, you requested the subscription and they obliged to your request. It works both ways. It is the correct etiquette. Believe it or not, most people are not criminals. They are just like you. Treat them with respect.

The SPAM button IS NOT an unsubscribe button! That is at the bottom of the page.

Clicking on the spam link initiates a complaint against the vendor. If there are enough complaints he may get black listed or his auto responder account may get shut down. A legitimate business owner has been hurt because of laziness, spite or just lack of education.

I urge you not to use the spam button, but to please UNSUBSCRIBE if that is your intention.

If you do get genuine spam (most of us do!), by all means report it or get rid of it by whatever means you have available. Spam filtration is a topic on its own and we might leave it for another day cause it can get a bit complicated.

Till next time, all the best!

Have you got the Adobe Reader blues?

Have you upgraded to the latest version of Adobe Reader?
I don't know about you, but I've had it!

Abobe 6 and 7 were great but the latest version 8, is probably the silliest, most unfriendly version of any program that I use. I did a bit of research and many people are experiencing a variety of problems with it. It's virtually impossible to get right, takes ages to load, and virtually impossible to navigate or customise!

Why do software developers have to keep changing things just for the sake of change? Why does every version have to get more and more complicated until no one can use it? Why do they remove good features or rearrange functions so that you no longer find them?

Software is supposed to be user friendly these days!

I've spoken to professionals in various industries who've bought "professional" standard software and they complain about the same issue. Not only that, they get slugged a fortune for the privilege and spend years trying to come to grips with all the "time saving" features.

"Joe Bloggs" can go down the street and buy similar user friendly software that does 90% of what the big stuff does, any school kid can use it and it costs $50!

Why is that?

Anyway, back to Adobe Reader. I have found a solution! Don't do what I did.!

Welcome back!

You know, the one thing I can't stand is internet businesses that don't measure up, or live up to their own hype. I broke one of my golden rules the other day and purchased some software from an online vendor. The software looked so good and the salespage was well written and informative, so I bought!

So, what golden rule did I break?

Before doing business, check out their support
and contact details and see if they exist!

Seems obvious but I didn't do it. Now I'm stuck with some software that I can't use, I'm a little poorer, as well as being really p----d (both at them and at myself).

Not only did I waste days trying to get this stuff to work properly, I got no reply to my request for a refund. They've got one of those "support" desks that never work, their refund page doesn't work, their email and Paypal addresses bounced!

What does one do? Somehow, these sort of characters should be exposed. It's funny... I've bought heaps of stuff online with no problems and this is only the second "ripp-off merchant" I've dealt with. In both cases they had one of those "help" desks and were uncontactable.

Also in both cases, they don't list any REAL contact details and were uncontactable except through the so called "support" channel. What's worse is, the first person was an extremely well known marketer!

Perhaps we should exposure these individuals. What do you think?

Joe

Is content dead?

How do you sift the genuine article from the BS? With the race to the top of the search engine charts, content generation has become prolific. Articles can be purchased with private rights or resale rights. These can be loaded into your new content generation software and "presto!" you've got instant content. Now if you got the more sophisticated stuff, you can submit thousands of articles to ezine directories and blogs and even put up endless sites. Amazing!

Result? Same junk everywhere or variations of it. How do pick them? Easy. They usually rate well in the search engines. When you look for something and click on it, you usually end up with a disappointing article and loads of ads and useless links. Some even seem like mini portals and you end up going in circles or going through dozens of pages to find what you want.

The other option many people utilise is ghost writers. Even the world's best known authors have ghostwriters pump out novel after novel for them. That's fine if you have knowledge on the subject and you can check if the ghostwriter's work is of a suitable standard. But what happens if you know little or nothing of the subject? Me thinks you have a good chance of getting more junk! Who wins and who loses?

The site owner/s win (temporarily anyway, until the search engines ban their latest scam). They get heaps of traffic and income from all the ads. Generally, the consumer usually loses, cause they can't find what they're looking for and even the advertisers may lose because they're not getting genuine traffic. Don't be fooled. Genuine content is around but you have to look hard for it. Maybe even referrals and recommended sites from other users may be better.

Get "The Genuine Article" here!
No computer generated content, no BS, no ghostwriters. You know what I'm talking about, then! It's about time the major Search Engines (Google, Yahoo & MSN) got rid of all the garbage on the internet. I know they try hard, but it's getting worse. Maybe they need human intervention.

We're being bombarded with sites that are created with special software, computer generated content, pages of ads, pages with a host of useless links, irrelevent content, old sites and pages that no longer exist, high ranking sites with links to nothing but error pages and all of the above, as well as a continuous supply of ads that do the same! Some marketers have sites that number in thousands of pages. This is computer generated BS.

I'm sick of it! People with genuine sites and real content and services to deliver haven't got a hope. And the poor consumer suffers as well! The consumer can't find genuine vendors and the genuine business operators can't reach their audience. This is a very serious problem and needs to be addressed.

I think I'll go back to using two tin cans and a piece of string and maybe even snail mail!

Happy Computing,
Joe

Is your domain safe?

Sounds like a weird question but there are “dodgy” domain names out there.
Geez, isn’t anything sacred?!! I was shocked when I stumbled across this bit of info. If you’re looking for a Domain name for your online business, beware!

“New.net” or “New Dot Net” markets alternative domain names (eg;.shop/.club/.law,etc). these are not actually real top level domains and need to be redirected through their site.

This is not such a big deal, it’s more clever marketing but the real issue is that it comes bundled with spyware and assorted junk which is a threat to your security and the operation of your system! You have to download a plug in for it to work and then you receive a whole bunch of file sharing software for your troubles.

If you have a real business, get a real domain name from as ICANN accredited supplier.

Make sure YOU own your domain!

Best wishes,
Joe

Computer Users...Is your computer as safe as you think?

Do you have a PC, a home based business or an internet connection?
